The Nanton Chamber Planter Barrel Program
You may have noticed several oak barrels around town, primarily on Main Street, as well as in a few other locations. These barrels are the property of the Chamber of Commerce and are loaned to Chamber members who want to use them. Members are responsible for planting and maintaining the barrels themselves, but the Chamber can remove and/or replace them as required within reason.
Marj Starke has taken over the planting and maintenance of the barrels for Beryl West, who handled this for many years. Marj spoke to several of Beryl's previous customers/businesses about whether they were interested in having her provide plants and maintenance. Marj can help if you want her to but that it is up to the business owner to determine whether they want to plant it themselves or have someone else plant it for them, with Marj being one option. We do want them planted and will gladly take them away if they are not going to be used, as they deteriorate very quickly if allowed to dry out for a season or two.
The board has started removing the barrels that are past their prime and is taking a closer look at this program and potentially replacing the barrels in the spring, depending on their condition.
